How Likely Am I to Have Serious Flu Symptoms?
Flu season is here, and flu rates are already much higher this year than they were last year. Getting the flu vaccine is the best way to prevent yourself from getting sick!
If you do happen to get the flu, though, how likely is it to experience serious complications? Not very likely, and our AFC Urgent Care Monroe Road team explains why below.
How Effective Is the Flu Vaccine?
Although flu vaccines aren’t 100% effective in preventing the virus, they’re still your best bet at preventing yourself from getting sick. According to the CDC, flu vaccines reduce the risk of flu illness by between 40% and 60%.
If you still get the flu after being vaccinated, the vaccine will work to greatly reduce the severity of your illness. Below, we’ve listed some flu symptoms to watch out for this winter.
Common Flu Symptoms
- Fever
- Aches and pains throughout the body
- Headaches
- Chills
- Sore throat
- An extreme feeling of fatigue
- A persistent and worsening cough
- Stuffy or runny nose
How Serious Is a Flu-Related Fever?
It shouldn’t be too serious. If you’re relatively healthy, you will likely only be dealing with a fever for between three and four days.
Generally, those who have compromised immune systems, older adults and young children are the most likely to experience serious flu complications. Regardless of your age or past health, contact your doctor if you experience any of the symptoms we’ve listed below.
When to See a Doctor
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Chest pain
- Ongoing dizziness
- Seizures
- Worsening of existing medical conditions
- Severe weakness or muscle pain
